Can you advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes. OpenAI sells ad placements that appear inside ChatGPT conversations, bought through its own Ads Manager, and advertisers in India can buy them. Ads are served to signed-in adult users on the free and lower-priced tiers; people paying for the higher tiers do not see them.
That last detail is worth sitting with before you budget anything, because it decides who you are actually reaching. You are not buying the whole ChatGPT audience. You are buying the part of it that has not paid to remove advertising — which, as with every ad-supported product, skews away from the highest-spending end of the market. For most businesses that is completely fine. For a few, it is the reason not to bother.
How is advertising on ChatGPT different from Google Ads?
A Google query is a few words with the context stripped out. Someone types "crm software" and you are left inferring the rest: company size, budget, whether they are buying or browsing, what they have already rejected.
A ChatGPT conversation carries that context explicitly. People describe the whole situation — the constraint, the deadline, the thing they tried that did not work — and ads are matched against the topic and intent of that discussion rather than a keyword you bid on. The signal is richer. The controls are thinner: far less manual targeting than a mature ad platform gives you, and reporting that is noticeably lighter than Google's.
The practical consequence is a shift in where the work sits. On Google, a decent operator can win on account structure and bid discipline. Here, structure matters less and the offer matters more. If the proposition is weak, there is no bidding trick that rescues it.
What can you actually buy?
Three things, and choosing between them is the first decision that meaningfully affects your results.
- Cost per thousand impressions — you pay for reach. Useful when the goal is genuinely awareness, and the wrong default for almost everyone else.
- Cost per click — you pay when someone comes through to your site. The sensible starting point for most businesses.
- Conversion-optimised cost per click — the system optimises towards what happens after the click. This only works if your conversion tracking already works, so it is a second-phase choice, not a first-week one.
Is it worth it for your business?
It depends almost entirely on whether people research what you sell before they buy it.
Considered purchases fit well. Services, education, B2B software, healthcare, finance, travel, property — categories where somebody sensibly asks for advice before committing. The conversation is where that advice now happens, so appearing in it is appearing at the moment of decision.
Impulse and visual categories fit badly. Most fashion, decor and homeware sell on being seen, and a text placement inside a chat is a poor substitute for a showroom or a scroll feed. If your product needs to be looked at rather than explained, your money is better spent where looking happens.
We assess exactly this before quoting anyone, and we say no when the answer is no. It is a cheaper conversation than a quarter of wasted spend.
What does it cost to find out?
There is no large minimum spend commitment and campaigns run on a modest daily budget, so a test is not a capital decision. Published rates move as more advertisers enter the auction, which is why you will not find a rate card on this page — a number printed here would be wrong within a year, and confidently wrong is worse than absent. Ask us and you will get what it costs this week.
The more useful framing is what a test buys you. A few weeks of honest data tells you your cost per enquiry on this channel, which audience language works, and whether the traffic converts at all. That is worth knowing whether or not you continue. What is genuinely expensive is three months of spend against the wrong objective with no tracking to prove it either way — which is the state most accounts are in when we are asked to take them over.
What to do before you spend anything
In this order, because doing them out of order is how budgets get wasted.
- Decide the one action that counts as success — an enquiry, a booking, a sale. Not "traffic".
- Make sure that action is tracked on your own property, in analytics and your CRM. Platform reporting on this channel is thin, so if measurement lives only in the dashboard you cannot tell a cheap click from a real customer.
- Write the offer down in one sentence. If it takes a paragraph, the ad will not work.
- Pick a budget you can afford to learn from rather than one you need to earn back in week one.
- Only then open the account.
Getting help with it
We plan, build and run this channel for businesses across India — targeting, creative, conversion tracking and the weekly decisions that decide whether the spend pays. If you would rather hand it over than learn it, that is what our ChatGPT ads service covers.
If you would rather run it yourself, the rest of this series goes deeper on each part, and our free tools cover the adjacent work — ad copy, landing page copy, and the prompt writing that speeds up creative production.
Common questions
Can Indian businesses advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes. OpenAI's Ads Manager is open to advertisers in India, and ads serve to signed-in adult users on the free and lower-priced tiers. Advertiser registration, billing and campaign setup are part of onboarding if we run it for you, so there is no platform paperwork on your side.
Do ChatGPT Plus subscribers see ads?
No. Advertising appears on the free and lower-priced tiers only, so the audience you are buying excludes people who have paid to remove it. Worth factoring into who you expect to reach before you set a budget.
What is the minimum budget?
There is no large minimum spend commitment and campaigns can run on a modest daily budget. The practical floor is higher than the technical one: you need enough clicks for a difference between two creatives to be distinguishable from chance, and below that a test tells you nothing you can act on.
How is it different from Google Ads?
Google matches a short query with the context stripped out. ChatGPT matches the context of a whole conversation, including constraints the person has already explained. Stronger intent signal, thinner controls and lighter reporting — so the offer and creative carry more weight, and bid micromanagement carries less.
